Kalamazoo County Senior Millage up for renewal

This August 6, the Kalamazoo County Senior Millage is up for renewal since passing in 2018. This was after years of trying to get a senior millage on the ballot. The proposal was for $2.82 million over six years, which ultimately passed by a landslide vote. Since 2018, the Center for Disability Services and Adult Wellness programs has received funding to provide free and reduced cost services for eligible seniors in the county.

By 2029, nearly 25% of Kalamazoo County residents will be aged 60 or older. With older adults preferring to age in their community, the Senior Millage enhances quality of life and fosters an age-friendly Kalamazoo. The Senior Millage is administered through the Kalamazoo County Health & Community Services Department, Area Agency on Aging, Region 3A.

The ballot will read: For the purpose of continuing a local fund as previously approved by the voters in 2018 to provide education, safety, dignity, independence, home services, and healthy living programs to Kalamazoo County residents age 60 and older (Seniors) using the Kalamazoo County Health & Community Services Department to improve the quality of living for our Seniors, shall the limitations on the total amount of taxes which may be levied against taxable property within Kalamazoo County, Michigan, as provided for by Section 6 of Article IX of the Michigan Constitution of 1963, be renewed at the level previously authorized as reduced by the Headlee Amendment at the rate of up to $0.3462 per thousand dollars of taxable valuation (0.3462 mills), for a period of six years, beginning with the December 1, 2024 levy and extending through the 2029 levy, which shall raise in the first year an estimated $ $3,696,436. For example, on a property with a residential market value of $200,000 (with an estimated taxable value of $100,000), the 0.3462 mills would equal approximately $34.62 of levied tax annually to support Older Adults throughout Kalamazoo County.

Below are some quick facts about the millage.
