Bio: 

Dr. Tim Pasang is chair of Western Michigan University’s Department of Engineering Design, Manufacturing and Management Systems. He received his Ph.D. in materials engineering (in aerospace materials) from Monash University (Australia) in 2001. His undergraduate degree is in metallurgical engineering from Indonesia. He spent a number of years as research engineer at the Indonesian Aircraft Industry. He worked as senior consultant at the PSB Corp in Singapore from 2001-2004, before moving to New Zealand. His research area covers various aspects of materials and manufacturing, especially welding, metal forming, machining, biomaterials and metal additive manufacturing. He was the head of Department of Mechanical Engineering at Auckland University of Technology (2012-2020) and also the director of the Engineering Research Institute (2016-2020). Prior to joining Western Michigan University, Dr. Pasang was the chair of the Department of Manufacturing, Mechanical and Engineering Technology at Oregon Institute of Technology.

Pasang also held the positions of Loewy Visiting Professor at Lehigh University’s Materials Science and Engineering Department (2010-2015, 2021); visiting professor at Akita University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009 and 2019); and honorary professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering/Institute of Mechatronic Engineering at National Taipei University of Technology in Taipei, Taiwan since 2019. He was a recipient of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Fellow in 2013.
