Western Michigan University’s Department of Civil and Construction Engineering student teams entered the following projects in the 2021 Senior Design Conference.
A two-part design and construction of a roundabout 4-way intersection to accommodate high volume of traffic safely and effectively was completed. The design addressed the increased level of traffic volume at the intersection to accommodate future development, traffic speed, and security. From analyzing traffic data, modeling software, including Synchro and AutoCAD Civil 3D, were used to show traffic flow, speed, and to simulate trucks maneuvering through the intersection. The construction engineering and management part of the project was completed using MS Project, Civil 3D, and the RS Means database and featured a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), schedule, and a cost estimate including labor, materials, and equipment.

The Second Avenue Bridge is a community connector from Wayne State University to downtown Detroit spanning over Interstate 94. Using computer modeling software, a design was developed for the temporary structural falsework for offsite bridge construction. Geotechnical, structural and transportation aspects of the temporary support structures for the offsite construction area were analyzed. For this design, a detailed cost estimate was also completed. The completed analysis will provide a more efficient and sustainable offsite construction area with minimal site damage and an alternate detour route for traffic during the construction process.
