Western Michigan University's campus utilities deliver services to over 150 buildings, consisting of:

Electrical Distribution System

  • Approximately 336,000 linear ft. of medium voltage cable.
  • 157 access vaults.
  • 233 Primary Switches.
  • Over 130,000 linear ft. of exterior lightning and secondary voltage conduit.

Steam and Condensate Systems for heating and hot water

  • Approximately 38,000 linear ft. of distribution Steam Main.
  • Aproximately 37,600 linear ft. of condensate return mains.
  • 53 Access Vaults.

Chilled water

  • Chilled, cooling towers, chilled water and condenser lines providing air conditioning to 33 buildings.
  • 12,000 ton-hour available cooling capacity.

Storm sewer system

  • 1,662 Manhole Structures.
  • Approximately 160,500 linear ft. of Sanitary Sewer Mains.
  • Approximately 14,500 linear ft. of Sanitary Sewer Laterals.
  • 64 main campus discharge points within the Arcadia Creek watershed.
  • 53 Storm Water Retention/Detention Features.
  • Parkview Campus contains all storm water on site.

Sanitary sewer system

  • 290 Manhole Structures.
  • Approximately 50,500 linear ft. of Sanitary Sewer Mains.
  • Approximately 14,500 linear ft. of Sanitary Sewer Laterals.

Water*

  • Approximately 5,000 linear ft. of Western Michigan University water mains.
  • Over 87,000 linear ft. of City of Kalamazoo owned and maintained water mains.

Natural Gas**

  • Approximately 5,000 linear ft. of Western Michigan University owned mains.
  • Over 44,000 linear ft. of Consumer Energy owned and maintained gas mains.

Tunnel

  •  Approximately 9,200 linear ft. of Utility Tunnel, carrying multiple distribution systems.
