Energy-Efficient Monitors

Do you still have a CRT computer monitor? A new LCD computer monitor reduces energy consumption and eye strain. Please see the Facilities Management CRT buyback program application for more details. Monitors must be University owned to qualify for the buyback program.

Energy management tip

If you are looking for a new monitor for your computer, the choice is obvious. In comparison to an outdated CRT monitor, a newer LCD monitor is sleek, light weight and has a much sharper picture quality. Also, an LCD monitor will have less strain on the user's eyes and requires roughly one third of the power that a CRT monitor does to operate.

CRT (cathode ray tube) monitor: Bulky, emission of electromagnetic radiation (very small amounts), weighs roughly 50 lbs, display slightly less sharp when compared to LCD, high power consumption when brightness and contrast is high, screen glare can cause eyes to strain after use.

LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor: Slim, light weight, high image quality, consumes roughly one-third of the power that a CRT monitor does, reduced strain on the user's eyes.
