Natural Heat
Warming up
During the winter months, the earth is further from the sun resulting in less heat and light, and higher energy usage costs. The following tips will tell you how to reduce energy costs and to utilize the rays of the sun more effectively:
1. Let in the light: Open the blinds and clear the space in front of windows to allow the sun's rays to enter the room and heat up the area during cold sunny days.
2. Trap the heat: Close the doors to rooms adjacent to the ones receiving the bulk of the sunlight to reduce the amount of heat lost to other areas.
3. Seal windows: Make sure that windows and doors are properly sealed to prevent heat loss due to drafts.
4. Clean windows: Make sure the windows are cleaned inside and out so that dust and dirt do not block light and prevent heat from entering.
Keeping cool
During the summer months, we are experiencing the full power of the sun and our living areas can become increasingly hot and bright. This high heat often causes discomfort and our first reaction is to turn on the air conditioner resulting in higher energy bills. A few ways to reduce the price of your energy bills and the temperature in your living area are listed below:
1. Keep blinds closed: By keeping your blinds or shades closed during the day, hot rays of the sun will be blocked and the room will not be directly heated.
2. Crack window open at night: When the sun goes down at night and the air begins to cool down, open the windows and circulate the air throughout the area.
3. Add a fan: By placing a fan in front of a cracked window at night, the air will be pulled into the room and a slight breeze will be created.
4. Turn off heat generating fixtures: Many electrical devices such as computers, gaming systems and inefficient light bulbs generate heat while running. Make sure that all light bulbs are CFL or LED lights that use energy efficiently and do not create unwanted heat.
