KALAMAZOO, Mich.—The numbers don’t lie: Western and its students are making their mark in research and innovation.

WMU recorded its highest number of patent filings to date during fiscal year 2025. The University submitted 26 first‑stage patent applications and 13 second‑stage applications—more than double the number filed the previous year. Five patents, covering technologies related to superconductors, biodegradable coatings and more, were issued during the 2025 fiscal year as well.

In keeping with Western’s focus on including students in the University’s innovation pipeline, 14 of the 26 first‑stage filings were led by undergraduates. Many of those products emerged through coursework and applied research experiences connected to the Richmond Institute for Design and Innovation, where students develop market‑ready products. In fiscal year 2025, those innovations included a rapid allergen detection device and a moveable storage basket for people who use wheelchairs.

“At Western,” says Dr. Remzi Seker, vice president for research and innovation, “the line between student learning and real-world innovation is exactly where we want it to be: invisible.”
