Theatre department sponsors canned food drive
KALAMAZOO—Western Michigan University's Department of Theatre has launched the annual Acting Against Poverty food drive.
The drive will run in conjunction with two Department of Theatre productions: "The Three Musketeers," Oct. 11-21, and "Spring Awakening," Oct. 26 through Nov. 4. Theatre patrons are encouraged to bring canned soups, stews or any other non-perishable food items with them to performances.
The community is also welcome to drop off food items at the box office Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. for the duration of the campaign. All donations will be contributed to Kalamazoo's local food pantry, Loaves and Fishes.
According to 2010 Census data, Kalamazoo ranks fifth among U.S. cities in terms of poverty; 38.8 percent of Kalamazoo city residents live below the poverty line. The Department of Theatre and its students aim to make sure no one goes hungry this winter season and to celebrate the spirit found in The Three Musketeers: "All for one, and one for all!"
