Czuchna

Paul E. Czuchna, a former Western Michigan University faculty member, died Friday, Oct. 12. He was 80.

Czuchna joined the WMU faculty in 1967 and retired in 1986 as an assistant professor emeritus of speech pathology and audiology after 19 years of service to the University. He was a speech pathologist specializing in articulation disorders in both children and adults.

A native of Michigan, Czuchna worked in the state as a regional speech therapist in the Quincy and Montcalm public schools from 1954 to 1967. His internationally known mentor, Dr. Charles Van Riper, encouraged him to leave his work in the public schools and join WMU's speech pathology and audiology faculty.

While at the University, Czuchna taught and supervised graduate students, and his reputation as an effective speech pathologist took him to summer-term work in places such as Missoula, Mo., in the United States and St. Johns, Newfoundland, and Arhus, Denmark, outside the country.

After retiring, Czuchna lived for a time in Mansfield, Ohio, as well as in Kalamazoo. More recently, he resided in Garden City, Idaho. He earned a bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University in 1954 and a master's degree in 1964 from Miami University of Ohio.
