54th annual Concerto Concert features student soloists

KALAMAZOO—The Western Michigan University Orchestra, under the direction of Bruce Uchimura, will present the 54th annual Concerto Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 14, in Miller Auditorium. Featured soloists are the winners of the 2013 School of Music’s Concerto Competition: soprano D. Giles Simmer, violinist Youyang Qu, and bassoonist Mingyuan Yang. The concert is free and open to the public.

Simmer will perform an aria from Gaetano Donizetti’s opera "Don Pasquale," Qu will perform Jan Sibelius’s "Violin Concerto," and Yang will perform Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s "Bassoon Concerto." In addition to these works, the orchestra will perform the overture to Giuseppe Verdi’s opera "La Forza del Destino" and Felix Mendelssohn’s "Symphony Number 5 in D Major," Opus 107.
