Arthur W.J. Stoddart obituary
Arthur W.J. Stoddart, a retired Western Michigan University faculty member, died Sept. 6 at home in Kalamazoo. He was 79.

Stoddart, an associate professor emeritus of mathematics, joined the WMU faculty in 1967 and retired in 1996 after 29 years of service to the University.
Previously, he was a lecturer at the University of Otago in New Zealand from 1958 to 1961 and in 1964-1965 as well as a senior lecturer there in 1965-66. He also was a visiting assistant professor at UCLA in 1966-67.
Stoddart, who was born in Owaka, New Zealand, had resided in the Kalamazoo area since coming to WMU. He loved mathematics, his gardens and especially his lakeside property.
He earned a bachelor's and master's degree from Otago in 1954 and 1955, respectively, and a doctoral degree from the University of Michigan in 1964.
