Industrial designers to speak on education challenges, opportunities

KALAMAZOO—Two of the nation's leading design educators will speak at Western Michigan University Monday, March 10, about the future of design and design education.

The talk from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in 3512 Knauss Hall features Eric Anderson, associate dean of the College of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University, and Craig Vogel, associate dean for graduate studies and research at the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning.

"Challenges and Opportunities with Relevance to Industrial Design" is the title of their talk. The free and open event is sponsored by WMU's College of Fine Arts.

Eric Anderson

Anderson is an associate professor of industrial design and co-director of the Master of Products Development program, along with his position as dean at Carnegie Mellon. He also is chair emeritus of the Board of Directors of the Industrial Designers Society of America.

His research focuses on visualization within the context of design, specifically how visual education is taught. His goal is to enable individuals and teams to more effectively engage in critical thinking and problem solving in the design process.

He holds a bachelor's degree from Philadelphia College of Art and a Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the Ohio State University.

Craig Vogel

Vogel is an internationally recognized designer, educator and author. He is a professor at UC, a Fellow of the Industrial Designers Society of America, recent chair of the board and past president elect. He has been a juror on the Industrial Design Excellence Awards competition sponsored by ISDA and Business Week and is an evaluator of industrial design programs for the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. He has crossed the globe as a guest lecturer speaking in New Zealand, Mexico, China and Korea.

His bachelor's degree and Master of Industrial Design degree are from Pratt Institute.
