Acclaimed playwright to visit WMU for Gwen Frostic Reading Series

KALAMAZOO, Mich.--An award-winning playwright will be the next featured writer in the Western Michigan University Fall 2014 Gwen Frostic Reading Series.

Peter Ullian will read from his works at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in Rooms 157-159 of the Bernhard Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Ullian is the author of the play "Big Bossman" and "Black Fire White Fire" which was chosen as a Top Ten finalist for the Jewish Play Project/JCC of Metrowest Jewsih Playwriting Contest and was presented as part of JPPs OPEN Festival of New Jewish Theater. He also wrote the librettos for the musicals "Signs of Life" and "Flight of the Lawnchair Man," which have been produced at theaters around the country.

Ullian is the winner of two Gilman & Gonzalez-Falla Musical Theater Foundation Comendation Awards and a Roger L. Stevens Award from the Kennedy Center/Fund for New American Plays.

He has received commissions from the Iowa Cultural Council, En Garde Arts, The Pince Music Theatre, the Denver Center Theatre Company and Snap Two Productions. His play "The Triumphant Return of Blackbird Flynt" is forthcoming from Broadway Play Publishing. Ullian has taught at State University of New York's College at Old Westbury and at the Playwright's Lab at Hollins University.
