Professor apponted to accrediting organization
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Nina Nelson, professor and chair of the Western Michigan University Department of Dance, has been appointed as the dance representative member of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Precollegiate Arts Schools, or ACCPAS.
Jory Hancock, Interim President of the National Association of Schools of Dance—NASD—appointed her to a three-year term, which began this past July.
ACCPAS was established by the Council of Arts Accrediting Associations to review and accredit schools and programs providing non-degree instruction in the arts disciplines to children, youth, and adults. Examples include Interlochen Arts Academy, the Music Institute of Chicago, and the Colburn School in Los Angeles.
Nelson has been an accreditation site visitor for NASD and has made numerous presentations at the organization’s annual meetings and administrative leadership training seminars. She has also been a consultant for institutions of higher learning that are preparing for accreditation. Nelson joined the WMU dance faculty in 1982 and has served as the department’s chair for more than 12 years.
