Robbery reported on campus; caution urged
A robbery occurred at just before 1 a.m. near the flagpoles at the center of the Western Michigan University campus. Although no weapon was seen, WMU public safety officials are treating it as an armed robbery.
During the incident, a lone male WMU student was accosted by five suspects described only as young, black males. The victim was told by one of the suspects that the group had a weapon. The suspects stole an article of clothing from the student, who was not injured.
Members of the campus community are urged not to walk alone and to be on the alert for a group fitting the suspects description or for any other suspicious activity. To report any additional information the WMU Department of Public Safety, call (269) 387-5555.
Update: A second male student victim who was robbed in the same area before midnight Oct. 10, also by a small group of men, has come forward to report the crime. The victim was walking alone at the center of campus when he was assaulted, knocked to the ground and robbed of a small amount of cash he was carrying.
The victim went to his residence hall for assistance and to summon medical assistance. He later reported the incident to police.
