WMU Ethics Center offers soul searching for professionals

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—A WMU-Cooley Law School professor will explore how professionals can examine their own ethics in a talk at Western Michigan University.

Nelson Miller will speak at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in 205 Bernhard Center as part of the Center for the Study of Ethics in Society's Fall 2015 Lecture Series. Miller's talk, titled "Sources of Ethical Commitment: Finding Your Ground for Finding Your Way," is free and open to the public.

Miller will explore how professionals can investigate history, philosophy and morality to vitalize their professional ethics and commitments. Drawing on the history, philosophy and morality of the law profession, Miller will illustrate how responsible professionals can research and reflect on foundational sources to develop a more committed and effective professional identity.

Miller practiced civil litigation involving personal injury, products liability, airliner and helicopter crashes, civil rights, securities, employment, real estate and business disputes before joining WMU-Cooley Law School as professor and associate dean.

Miller has published 28 books and dozens of book chapters and articles on law, legal ethics, legal education and other law subjects. He has been board president for the Legal Assistance Center, a courthouse-based service providing legal forms and information to thousands of unrepresented parties annually in Kent County. The State Bar of Michigan recognized Miller with the John W. Cummiskey Award for pro-bono service.

Miller's presentation is co-sponsored by the WMU-Cooley Law School.
