New WMU trustee sworn in, to join board for upcoming meeting

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Newly appointed Western Michigan University trustee William Pickard was sworn in Tuesday, Sept. 6, and will take his place at the board table when WMU trustees convene for a formal session at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7.

Pickard, of Bloomfield Hills, was sworn in by 8th Judicial District Court Judge Christopher T. Haenicke  in a 4 p.m. ceremony in the President's Dining Room of the Bernhard Center. The ceremony included brief remarks by Pickard, Board Chair Ken Miller and WMU President John M. Dunn.

Pickard's appointment was announced by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder June 22. He will serve through 2020, filling out a term left vacant when Trustee Ronald E. Hall of Detroit died June« 1.

When trustees meet Wednesday morning, they will hear a number of information items on new campus initiatives, including a new WMU marketing campaign and the launch of an opportunity for students to enhance and individualize their credentials. The board also will receive and be asked to approve reports covering personnel moves, receipt of gifts and grants, and changes to academic programs as well as information about operating cash accounts and annuity and life income funds.
