Vow renewal sets world record, grabs international coverage
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—With 1,201 couples renewing their vows on the Grand Lawn near Heritage Hall Oct. 8, Western Michigan University set a new Guinness World Record for the most vow renewals in one place at one time.
The event also garnered international attention, with an Associated Press Story about the event being tracked as far away as the Philippines. As the old record of 1,087 couples—set in 2009 at Miami University—fell by the wayside, participants in the WMU event celebrated with champagne and cake. They also watched and recorded videos, had their photos taken, and took selfies.
A collection of photos and videos as well as links to media coverage has been posted at mywmu.com/vows. The collection includes an online gallery of photos taken at the event, as well as links to stories in such news outlets as the Kalamazoo Gazette, WWMT, WKZO, the Washington Post, Miami Herald and the Chicago Tribune.
