Beatrice P. Hartman, assistant professor emerita of communication at Western Michigan University, died Nov. 15. She was 91.

Hartman joined the WMU faculty in 1957 and retired in 1985 after more than 27 years of service to the University.

She primarily taught speech and communication courses and helped bring to campus a variety of notable speakers. In addition, she was a faculty advisor to numerous student organizations, including the Republicans of WMU, the Students for Life and WIDR-FM, WMU's student-run radio station.

Hartman was an active member of several professional organizations, including the Central States Speech and Michigan Speech associations as well as University Professors for Academic Order, which she served as its Michigan director and as a member of its board of directors and executive committee. She also was active in several community organizations.

Before coming to WMU, Hartman taught at Michigan State University. She earned a bachelor's degree from Denison University, a master's degree from the University of Michigan, and nearly completed a doctoral degree at MSU.
