Students have two chances this month to improve financial literacy

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—In celebration of Michigan's Financial Literacy Awareness Month, WMU will be holding a Financial Fling twice this month to help empower students to make informed choices about money and improve their long-term financial wellness.

The events are slated for 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 6, and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, in 1740 Sangren Hall.

Both Financial Flings are free and include gift card drawings and prize giveaways. They are being organized by the recently established Financial Literacy, Educational Planning and Outreach unit in the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships.

The April 6 event will center around a screening of the one-hour documentary, "Your Money, Your Life." The film raises fiscal consciousness on everything from banking and credit to investments, budgeting, insurance and self-employment. Popcorn will be provided, and after the screening, attendees may engage in one-on-one discussions about identity theft protection issues.

The Financial Fling on April 12 will feature two back-to-back presentations offering information about building a financial future.
