KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Excavation underway near Western Michigan University's Sindecuse Health Center resulted in a natural gas line being nipped, causing a small gas leak that closed the health center for an hour early Tuesday, May 9.

A WMU landscaping crew doing work on a stormwater inlet stopped work immediately and the line was shut down as WMU's Department of Public Safety put out a campus message just before 8 a.m. urging people to avoid the area. Sindecuse also was evacuated as a precaution.

Consumers Energy was on site immediately, and before 9 a.m., repairs were completed and Sindecuse and the roads surrounding it were reopened. The incident caused Sindecuse to cancel scheduled appointments until 10 a.m. Campus community members affected by those cancellations should contact the health center to reschedule by calling (269) 387-3287.
