KALAMAZOO, Mich.−The Western Michigan University Board of Trustees is set to welcome new trustees with a swearing-in ceremony and elect its leadership when the board meets at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, in the WMU Student Center Ballroom. The meeting also will be livestreamed.

Appointed to the University's governing board by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer earlier this month, James L. Liggins Jr. of Kalamazoo and Kara Wood of Grand Rapids will be taking the oath of office. Judge Christopher T. Haenicke of Kalamazoo County's Eighth District Court will administer the oath.

Liggins fills a vacancy created by the death of the late trustee Shani J. Penn. He will serve the remainder of an eight-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2024. Wood succeeds former trustee Kurtis Trevan, who relocated to live out of state. Wood will serve through Dec. 31, 2028.

Additionally, the meeting will include the election of the board’s officers, a proposal to authorize WMU President Edward Montgomery to confer degrees on the board’s behalf at commencement ceremonies in 2024, and reports covering personnel moves and curriculum proposals. Find the board’s full agenda online. Individuals wishing to address the board during either public comment section must email Dr. Kahler Schuemann by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24.
