Faculty scholars, distinguished teachers and dedicated staff to be honored at Fall Awards Celebration Oct. 2

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Western Michigan University’s Fall Awards Celebration on Friday, Oct. 2, will recognize exceptional faculty and staff with the presentation of awards for outstanding teaching, service and scholarship. The celebration will begin at 11 a.m. in the Fetzer Center’s Kirsch Auditorium.  

President Russ Kavalhuna and Dr. Chris Cheatham, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, will lead the celebration, recognizing the following award recipients.  

Make a Difference Annual Awards

• Victoria Hastings, police sergeant
• Giulia Hayes, scholarship specialist
• Chris Salvaggio, administrative assistant senior in the School of Interdisciplinary Health Programs
• Teri Wagner, custodian

Distinguished Service Awards

• Dr. Christina Chin, professor of art education
• Dr. Brian Gogan, professor of English

Distinguished Teaching Awards

• Dr. Martha Councell-Vargas, professor of flute
• Dr. Lisa DeChano-Cook, professor in the School of Environment, Geography and Sustainability

Distinguished Faculty Scholar Awards  

• Dr. Fritz Allhoff, professor of philosophy
• Dr. Brooks Applegate, professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, Research and Technology

Emerging Scholar Award

• Dr. Evan Kutzler, associate professor of history
