Western welcomes new full-service restaurant to student center
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—The smell of ramen is wafting through the air at the Western Michigan University Student Center. HÔU JIA Kitchen and Bar, featuring the bold flavors of Taiwanese street fare, is now officially open.
"We couldn't be more excited to welcome HÔU JIA to the student center," says Paul Terzino, student center director.
The new restaurant, part of the Hunan Gardens family, moved into the space formerly known as The Pub across from the game room on the student center's first floor. HÔU JIA (pronounced HOH jyuh) translates to “tasty food and drink,” and the restaurant aims to capture the flavors of traditional Taiwanese night markets. Its menu includes items such as ramen noodles, bento boxes, boba and bubble tea. The restaurant will also sell beer and wine.
“We wanted to recreate the lively, bustling atmosphere of the markets—a space where students and community members can come together,” says Jim Chiang, HÔU JIA Kitchen and Bar owner. “Through this experience, we hope to spark cultural exchange and connection, using food as a way to celebrate and share the heart of our heritage.”
In addition to being a full-service restaurant, Terzino expects HÔU JIA Kitchen and Bar will also be a space for live entertainment and other events.
"Our vision is to energize the space with programming, whether it's a registered student organization or a performance by the music department. It’s a place to come and enjoy a good meal and also enjoy some entertainment from time to time," he says.
