Applications are open for WMU/AAUP Scholarship for First-Generation Students
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Applications for the WMU/AAUP Scholarship for First-Generation Students are now open through Friday, Jan. 16, 2026. WMU students may apply for the spring 2026 scholarship cycle. Information and applications for the 2026–27 scholarship cycle are also available online.
The scholarship was first announced earlier this semester as an innovative partnership between the WMU chapter of the American Association of University Professors (WMU-AAUP) and WMU President Russ Kavalhuna.
The scholarship will provide up to three awards of $5,000 each to eligible students who are the first in their families to attend college and who have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Recipients must demonstrate academic success at WMU and a strong interest in advancing justice, peace, democracy or health through education.
“The WMU/AAUP Scholarship for First-Generation Students advances our belief in public higher education as a transformative force,” Andrew Hennlich, the WMU-AAUP chapter president, said when the scholarship was announced in November. “We are proud to stand with our campus partners to help Western students achieve their goals, both as scholars and as engaged citizens.”
The scholarship fund was established with $4,500 from WMU-AAUP and $10,500 in personal contributions from President Kavalhuna. Its launch reflects continued collaboration between WMU-AAUP leadership and the University administration aimed at expanding access to higher education and supporting student success.
“This initiative is what Bronco teamwork is all about, creating opportunities for students together,” Kavalhuna says. “I’m especially grateful to the WMU-AAUP membership for their spirit of partnership and shared conviction that education is a force for good. When we unite behind our mission, we multiply the impact we can have on our students and community.”
