WMU, Make-A-Wish Michigan partner to support cancer survivor’s dreams of becoming a nurse
SOUTHFIELD, Mich.—In a powerful moment of hope and possibility, Make-A-Wish Michigan, in partnership with Western Michigan University, granted high school senior Adalae’s wish for tuition assistance, helping launch her next chapter as a college student and future advocate for children facing critical illnesses.
Adalae, a Grand Rapids-area resident, plans on attending Western in the fall and pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing with a focus in pediatric oncology—a path that allows her to give back to children navigating medical challenges of their own.
That dream took a life-changing step forward when she was surprised during a special celebration with the news. The announcement was delivered alongside University leadership and Make-A-Wish Michigan supporters, including a special video message from WMU President Russ Kavalhuna, personally welcoming Adalae to campus and celebrating her future as a Bronco.
“You are an inspiration to all of us, Adalae,” said Kavalhuna. “We are so proud that you are coming to Western in the fall, and thank you to Make-A-Wish for making this happen. Go Broncos!”
For Make-A-Wish Michigan, wishes like Adalae’s reflect the deeper impact of the wish experience, especially for teens nearing adulthood.
“Adalae, your wish is officially granted,” said Michael Hull, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish Michigan. “We are so proud of your bravery, your resilience, and your dedication to pursuing a future where you can help others.
“While doctors provide the medicine, a wish provides hope and strength,” Hull added. “And in Adalae’s case, it’s also an investment in her future. One day, she may sit on the other side of this journey, referring children for wishes herself, knowing firsthand just how powerful a wish can be.”
Across Michigan, hundreds of children are still waiting for their wish. Community members and medical providers can help make more stories like Adalae’s possible by referring a child for a wish or supporting Make-A-Wish Michigan’s mission.
