Bio:

Dr. Donald Meyer is chair of the Department of Economics at Western Michigan University.

Meyer regularly teaches a master’s level course on the economics of risk and information and he includes aspects of risk and insurance in his doctoral microeconomic theory course. He aspires to develop and teach an undergraduate elective course in health economics in the near future.

Meyer’s research has largely looked at the importance of risk, the decision maker’s attitude towards it and various aspects of the demand for insurance.  His work has been published in:

  • Journal of Risk and Uncertainty
  • Journal of Risk and Insurance
  • Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance Theory

Two of his papers have explored the effect of excluded losses on insurance demand and the demand for self-protection.

The health field encompasses many of Meyer’s research interests and also deals with issues of primary significance including:

  • What is the importance of good health and how does one best seek to attain it?
  • How are health insurance, self-protection and self-insurance related in dealing with health risk?

Meyer hopes to address these and related questions through future research efforts.
