Patricia Reeves, the project director, says the initiative began among a group of West Michigan school superintendents determined to improve student reading levels by working together to build a school leadership model around the practices they saw in use at high-performing schools. "Initiatives that build from the ground up, like this one, are so precious," says Reeves. "They can ultimately lead to real change, and our job is to provide the support necessary to make this enormously ambitious project work and keep a complex range of moving parts in sync."

The same goats were used for BIOS 4970, and their farmer-owner met on site with students to share his expertise. "Through our previous projects, we learned that goats do a great job of clearing brush and invasive vegetation, despite uneven terrain, noxious weeds and bugs. So they're an environmentally friendly land management tool compared to using large machines, chemicals and other traditional methods," Keto says.

Faculty and staff should not access student academic records unless their job duties specifically require access. Student information should never be accessed for personal reasons or out of curiosity.
