Lester Baird Lester "Frank, Hot Rod" Baird , a former pipefitter in the maintenance services unit of the Department of Facilities Management at Western Michigan University, died Aug. 20 . He was 66. Baird joined the WMU staff in 1987 and retired in 2011 after 24 years of service to the University. His job primarily involved helping WMU maintain its myriad steam pipes and doing welding as assigned. Earlier in his career, he was a boilermaker who built nuclear and conventional power plants.

The volunteer experience in Africa forced her to mature rapidly and dispelled the somewhat ivory tower view of anthropology and culture she had developed in the classroom before she planted her feet on the ground.

Free Chinese culture workshops offered this spring

She majored in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and spent five years teaching Chinese as a second language. During that time, she held several part-time jobs as a Chinese language teacher. Elaine Lui and YuJu Huang are the instructors for the Chinese Cooking workshop. Lui grew up in Hangzhou, China. She is a WMU alumna who earned a master's degree in applied statistics.

The Gold Standard 2020 has been in development since July 2015, guided by a campuswide transition team whose job it was to review the results of the original three-year plan, identify parts of the original plan that needed to be retained, and identify new challenges and opportunities that should be included moving forward.
