After graduation, Jared Field, B.A.'12, went on to work as a production roaster for Water Street Coffee in Kalamazoo. He found that he had a passion for roasting coffee and this passion led him to open his own business. He founded Bloom Coffee Roasters in 2014 with the goal of providing the best direct trade sourced coffee to the people of Michigan. Bloom is best described by their philosophy:

"Bloom is a term that accompanies coffee with many different meanings. When the seed is planted to begin the growth of a coffee tree, the tree will Bloom. Once the tree has bloomed, it will begin producing a cherry. Every new coffee producing season, just before it begins producing the cherry, the coffee tree produces a white flower that blooms beautifully and expands vast across a coffee plantation. After it is processed, bagged, shipped and roasted, it is time to brew. Once the coffee has come into touch with water, it will expand which many refer to as a stage called Bloom. Once the coffee consumer drinks a cup, they have furthered their potential to Bloom and are motivated to do so, to positively affect their lives, their communities, their mentality and their relationships. Bloom is more than a company name. It’s a philosophy," says Field.

Dedicated to creating a sustainable coffee roasting business, the company works with coffee sourcing professionals to find beans that are sourced from farms all over the world. The company helps small coffee growers to maintain their way of life, and are using their coffee beans to create a business that gives back to Michigan communities.

As Field puts it, "Our business model is based around coffees that serve a greater purpose. We are currently sourcing coffees through direct trade initiatives from Café Imports so that we can eventually go to the source ourselves. What attracted me about the coffee industry is the amount of good that can be done, while at the same time, doing business. For the most part, if it is done right, everyone benefits from seed to cup. And, we are going to do it the right way. We also want to be a contributor to the local community so we are working with a company that is based in Kalamazoo called Proper to put together “Proper” programs, or programs that benefit the community socially and economically, to live that philosophy as well."
