Spring Into The Streets

Spring into the Streets is an annual event during which WMU students, faculty, and staff are invited to signup and volunteer at sites all across Kalamazoo. This year we will have volunteer activities on Friday, March 27, 2026 through Sunday, March 29, 2026.

Sign up for each activity/site will be conducted through ExperienceWMU - click on the specific events below to be directed to the RSVP page. Once redirected, students, faculty, and staff will need to sign-in to RSVP. Spaces at some locations are limited, so check it out and sign up early!!

Growing Community Garden at Sunnyside United Methodist Church

Garden clean-up and spring preparation: removing plant debris, moving compost into garden beds and raised beds, installing arch panels for vining plants, preparing planting beds, organizing compost materials, filling containers with soil and compost, planting early crops (chickpeas, lettuce, radishes, kale), broadcasting red clover for cover cropping, organizing shed storage, and setting up rain barrels connected to downspouts for irrigation.

Intergenerational Game Day & Cookies with Heritage Community of Kalamazoo

Join us for an afternoon of games, prizes, conversation, and cookies with members of Heritage Community of Kalamazoo! This event gives Western Michigan University students the chance to connect with older adults, share stories, and build meaningful connections across generations. Through conversation and friendly games, students can gain valuable insight, advice, and perspective that can support their personal and professional growth.

Tays Farm Bed Preparation Station with Edison Neighborhood Association

Garden Preparation: Assist with moving woodchips and organic materials, clearing dead trees or branches, and preparing soil for the upcoming growing season.

Kalamazoo River Cleanup with MI Waterways Stewards

Removing litter and trash, Clearing invasive trees, bushes, and other flora, Creating improved sight lines to create greater connectivity between the parks and Kalamazoo River, Creating generous overlooks of Kalamazoo River to improve the guest experience.
