Eval Cafe: Assessment for Liberation: From Theory to Practice

Abstract: Under the disjuncture-response dialectic (Sul, 2021), culturally specific assessment (Sul, 2019) developers function within a swirling environment of socio-historical factors that produces both disjunctures and cultural aspirations for new assessment possibilities and uplifting directions. Within this space, settler colonialism (Wolfe, 2006), slavery, structural elimination (Sul, 2021), measurement disjuncture (Sul, 2019), as well as structural amplification (Sul, 2021), autonomy, self-determination, and liberation all reside alongside the culturally specific assessment development process. Disjunctures within the assessment and evaluation literature and cultural aspirations embedded within the assessment development portfolio of the presenter will be shared. A description of implications for assessment theory and a call for collaborative partners will seek to advance the field of assessment.
