Goals and Planning Principles

The campus plan goals emerged from several rounds of campus engagement during the Spring 2024 semester. The goals have an intentionally broad reach as they provide pillars for the University to follow as the plan is implemented. Goals guide the physical development of the campus environment and are aligned with the strategic plan core values.

Goals

Strategic Plan Core Values

The strategic plan core values of the University have guided the creation of campus plan goals. Those core values are:

  • Community-Engaged.
  • Equity-Centered.
  • Discovery-Driven.
  • Learner-Focused.
  • Sustainability-Guided.

Promote Health and Equity

Embed health and equity goals across campus with a focus on the eight dimensions of wellness and promoting access and opportunity across a diverse group of learners.

A Vibrant Future for Campus

The six campus plan goals lead to a campus experience where students, faculty and staff can grow, thrive and belong.

Planning Principles

  • Protect the natural valleys and preserve open space.
  • Develop and improve campus edges and gateways to celebrate arrival and promote visibility and safety.
  • Embrace mixed-use, compact districts to spark vibrancy and foster community building across campus.
  • Further strengthen the pedestrian experience by improving connections, placemaking moments and open spaces.
  • Improve mobility and access to/from campus and enhance connectivity to downtown Kalamazoo.
  • Plan for flexibility and adaptation to respond to future needs.
