Autumn Haagsma is the Director of the Michigan Repository for Research and Education and Assistant Director of the Michigan Geological Survey at Western Michigan University. Her research interests focus on the intersection of geosciences, sustainability, and societal needs, with a focus on climate related issues. Her research is largely funded by the U.S. Department of Energy for Carbon, Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) projects which includes geologic mapping and characterization, risk assessments, modeling, application of data analytics and machine learning, integration with societal considerations, and community outreach and education.
After earning her M.S., Mrs. Haagsma was employed as a research geoscientist at Battelle Memorial Institute (2013-2023). There, she was a lead geologist and team lead helping to strategize and develop new projects, mentor students, interns, and early careers, and conduct high-quality research. Her projects included the Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (MRCSP), Midwest Regional Carbon Initiative (MRCI), CarbonSAFEs, wellbore integrity studies, enhanced oil recovery using CO2, and many others. In 2023, Mrs. Haagsma joined MGS/MGRRE with the goal to expand clean energy, carbon sequestration, and climate related research in Michigan and conduct more mentoring, and outreach and education.
Autumn Haagsma is an active member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) serving on the executive leadership council of the Eastern Section, past leadership in the Division of Environmental Geosciences, member of the sustainability committee, member of the GAIA committee, member of the Women’s Network, and assistant editor of their journal. She has also served on numerous technical committees for conferences, helped create a conference dedicated to CCUS, and is the Chair of the CCUS conference 2020-2023.
When she isn’t working, she can be found chasing her three kids and various animals, collecting rocks, covered in paint in her art room, or nestled in a chair reading.
