Master's in Industrial Engineering Program Requirements
Admission Requirements:
A candidate for admission to the Master of Science program in Industrial Engineering must:
- Possess a baccalaureate degree with a major in a technical field such as engineering or a related discipline.
- Satisfy all the master's admission requirements of both the University and the department.
- Possess a grade point average of 3.0 or better.
- Submit GRE scores for the General Test.
Students with a B.S. in industrial engineering will usually not be required to take any prerequisite classes. Students with other majors are encouraged to apply, but they may be required to take prerequisite courses depending upon their background. Applicants with a grade point average of at least 2.6 but under 3.0 will be given probationary admission--non-degree status. They may be granted regular admission after completing nine hours of approved graduate courses toward a MSIE degree with a grade of "B" or better in each course.
Program Requirements
Thesis and non-thesis options are available. Both programs are directed by the student's major advisor and the graduate committee. Details of these options are presented below:
Thesis option
- A written thesis which meets Graduate College requirements and an oral examination in defense of the thesis.
- An approved, integrated program with a minimum of 30 semester hours of credit and an overall grade of "B" or better with no grade below "C."
- The 30 credits must be completed as follows:
- 18 credits of core requirements
- Six credits of IEE 7000, Master's thesis
- Six credits of electives
Non-thesis option
- An approved, integrated program with a minimum of 30 semester hours of credit and an overall grade of "B" or better with no grade below a "C."
- The 30 credits must be completed as follows:
- 18 credits of core requirements.
- Three credits of IEE 6970, Problems in Industrial Engineering, or an approved 6000 level IEE & EM elective.
- Nine credits of electives at least six of which will be from the IEE & EM department.
Core Requirements
The core consists of six courses. These courses have been selected to prepare students in advanced concepts in different areas of industrial engineering. The core courses are:
IEE 5160 - Design of Experiments and Regression Analysis
IEE 6060 - Capital Budgeting and Cost Analysis
IEE 6110 - Deterministic Methods in Operations Research
EM 6120 - Production and Operations Management
IEE 6300 - Advanced Simulation Modeling and Analysis
IEE 6420 - Ergonomics and Occupational Biomechanics
