Learner support program self-study reports available for review

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—A campuswide observation team has launched Phase II of Western Michigan University's Learner Support Program Review and Planning cycle.

Starting Jan. 19, the LSPRP Observation Team began a peer review of the self-study reports submitted from the 117 programs identified as focusing on learner support. WMU faculty and staff may review the submitted self-study reports through a secure site by selecting Program Review SharePoint Gateway at wmich.edu/effectiveness/program/support.

The Learner Support Program Review and Planning cycle is the second round of the University's ongoing integrated program review and planning process. The first round, Academic Program Review and Planning, was completed during 2014-15.

LSPRP focuses on learner support units, which primarily offer programs that contribute to the learning, growth and development of learners outside of traditional curricular instruction. The self-study reports now under review were the culmination of Phase I of this cycle, which began July 15, 2016, and ended in December.

LSPRP's second phase

Phase II has begun with an observation team comprised of staff members from learner support programs across campus reviewing submitted self-study reports.

Using an observation rubric constructed by a peer management team, the observation team is working in subgroups of three-to-four members to review the reports from all 117 programs that have been identified.

The subgroups will complete their observations by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, and provide next-level reviewers with a list of the programs' overall strengths and key areas for development.

Those next-level supervisors, such as directors and managers of the units offering the programs, will review the reports as well as the observation team's feedback. Then they will provide recommendations to their units' senior leaders sometime in April.

Lastly, senior leaders will review all feedback and provide recommendations to their units by the end of the academic year, June 30, so appropriate planning can begin.

Additional information

The Learner Support Program Review and Planning cycle includes a third phase that focuses on planning, decision-making and implementation.

Phase III is expected to begin July 1 and be ongoing. It will allow senior leaders to review the information that has been reported and apply it to decision-making in their respective areas.
