Dustin Altschul is a multidisciplinary designer whose work ranges in scales from the object, interior environments, buildings, and urbanscapes. Dustin’s work and teaching pedagogies contain a continuous thread of progressing the application of design technologies to realize progressive futures for humanity with a further compounded ethos of environmental stewardship. Alongside his teaching, Dustin is also the co-founder and principal architect of Hungry Architecture. Hungry Architecture was founded to extensively pursue speculative and realized projects as a spatial design collaborative operating at the nexus of environmentalism, artistry, technology, and activism.
Being trained as an engineer and an architect has given Dustin a broad career that allowed him to engage with the design of net-zero energy homes, numerous LEED-certified university buildings, bespoke movie theatres, healthcare surgical suite additions, and mid-rise mixed-use buildings. The largest project Dustin has been involved with to date was the Doha Convention Center Tower while with ARUP, where the most impactful project was likely contributing to the development of a robust sustainable design education program while with Autodesk.
Dustin’s recent and current research projects include virtual reality prototyping and codesigning for interior environments, the use of AI in design concepting and performance validation, and the environmental benefit of material reuse in construction. Additionally, Dustin has served on the AIA Southwest Michigan Board of Directors since 2019; holding the current position of President, is on the Bronco Construction Research Center advisory committee, serves as chair of the Branch Areas Careers Center Architectural Advisory Committee, and was previously a scientific reviewer for the Passive Low Energy Architecture conference.
Within the Richmond Institute for Design and Innovation setting, Dustin is a tenure-track professor of design practice who also serves as an academic and design internship advisor for all students of the Richmond Institute. Dustin’s teaching focuses on upper-level design studios, digital visualization, computational design, and practices of the design profession.
