Dr. Emily Exline is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at Western Michigan University.
Dr. Exline earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in behavior analysis from Baylor University under the mentorship of Drs. Tonya Davis and Stephanie Gerow. After earning her Ph.D., she went on to a post-doctoral fellowship at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Kennedy Krieger Institute with mentorship from Drs. Louis Hagopian and Jonathan Schmidt.
The overarching theme of Dr. Exline’s work is assessment and treatment of severe challenging behavior. More specifically, she is interested in increasing generalization and maintenance of the effects of these interventions. She has explored this idea through caregiver training, thinning schedules of reinforcement, and participant preference of multiple interventions. Currently, Dr. Exline is exploring the efficacy along with participant preference of different schedule thinning techniques. While these are her primary interests, she has also explored other topics related to severe challenging behavior including early intervention, self-injurious behaviors, and staff adherence to protocols.
Dr. Exline is considering graduate applications for fall 2026 admission.
