WMU alumna, Beulah Reece, inspires family full of educators

Beulah Reece received her master’s degree along with son, Tom, and daughter-in-law, Sandy, on their WMU graduation day (1964). At just nineteen years of age, Beulah's first teaching job was at the Factoryville School in St. Joseph County, Michigan, where she taught “beginners” through eighth grade. She was paid $40 a month as a base salary and earned an extra $5 a month for janitorial duties.

.— The Aspiring Educators of Michigan (AEM) at Western Michigan University recently hosted their annual, "So, you want to be a Teacher" workshop to introduce students to the field of teaching. On April 8 , attendees had the opportunity to listen and learn from speakers as they shared information about the job market for teachers and how to stand-out when applying for positions. “AEM at WMU is a place where aspiring educators can gather and grow," explained Collin Holzberger , president of AEM at WMU.

There was little motion in the seniority ranks to move up the list, let alone upgrade to captain. I was fortunate to hold on to my job as friends and colleagues were furloughed. Still, it was a great job to gain experience in airline operations and do all-weather -- and I mean all-weather -- flying. I learned more as a first officer, gaining soft skills figuring out how to adapt to each captain's temperament, and how I could best perform as a teammate with the person sitting to my left."

Fashion program hosts annual career week giving students an inside look at the industry

“We developed this fashion career week which has about 17 speakers, for industry professionals to come into a variety of different classes to speak about what it is they do in their job,” explained Kelly Weathers , faculty specialist II. “Students learn real world experiences, what people are really doing in the world. It is one thing when I tell them what the job is or how the industry works; it is another thing when a professional is then saying the same things to them,” she added.

In this role I manage our selective admissions programs, so I support our program specialist in evaluating applications, ranking in scoring applicants and delivering admissions decisions. It is a really fun part of my job; especially when you get to call that alternate student who’s been waiting for that call. Also in this role, I admit and advise our international students of which we currently have nine.
