WMU students gain valuable experience at autism clinic
During the fall 2015 semester, the Western Evaluation Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (WECAN) at the Western Michigan University Unified Clinics provided rich educational opportunities for three undergraduate clinical assistants. Undergraduate student clinical assistants were selected from students majoring in psychology, occupational therapy and speech pathology, and this student make-up mirrors the WECAN’s interprofessional clinical team. The students’ primary roles were to assist the clinicians during evaluations and general operations. They had time for observation and feedback, which enhanced their educational experience.
“It was great to see the three students collaborate across disciplines and really try to learn more about the roles and practice of professionals in other fields outside their own major course of study. It happened naturally as we had hoped.” Said Kimberly Bancroft, Ph.D. Licensed Clinical Psychologist, WECAN Clinical Coordinator.
