You'll focus on engineering concepts while developing your path to further education or the workforce. This certificate program is offered in Kalamazoo and as a dual-enrollment program or through Western's AMP Lab in Grand Rapids.

What you'll learn in the integrated design and manufacturing certificate program

This program lets you explore manufacturing and design in a way that will lead to education or workforce pathways. The courses in this certificate program lead directly into undergraduate degrees at Western, including the following: 

After completing this certificate, you will be ready to pursue these bachelor's degrees or join the workforce in a variety of roles, including:

  • Entry level machinist
  • CAD technician
  • CAD/CAM technician

Curriculum 

The following courses are required for students to participate in the undergraduate certificate in integrated design and manufacturing:

  • EDMM 1420—Engineering Graphics (3 credit hours)
  • EDMM 1430—Product Design Fundamentals (3 credit hours)
  • EDMM 1500—Introduction to Manufacturing (3 credit hours)
  • EDMM 1501—Processes and Materials in Manufacturing Laboratory (1 credit hour)
  • EDMM Electives (6 credit hours):
    • EDMM 2460 CAD—Solid Modeling
    • EDMM 2540—Machine Processing
    • other approved electives

At least 9 of the 16 credit hours required to complete this certificate must be fulfilled by courses taken from WMU. The courses in this certificate program may also be transferred for credit in associate degree programs at several Michigan community colleges.

Admissions requirements for certificate in integrated design and manufacturing

There are transfer options for some of the courses, but students should connect with the engineering design technology academic advisor, Ben Carr, and their community college advisor to coordinate the transfer process.

Guest and non-degree seeking students do not qualify for traditional federal financial aid. Student should explore other options that may be available including Michigan Works! grants, private loans and employer tuition remission programs. Contact the financial aid office for more information.

Computer-aided design and manufacturing technicians link ideas to finished products using specialized software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Fusion 360 or Mastercam.to create digital design and 3D models.

CAD/CAM technicians help produce things such as car parts, airplane components, medical devices, furniture, consumer products, construction materials or custom metal or plastic parts.
