Welcome to Fall 2022!

I am very happy to welcome you all to the start of our new academic year. Whether you are a new student or just new to our college, a transfer student or an international student, our staff members and I are very glad you are in the Lee Honors College. I hope that as the semester advances, you are becoming more familiar with the great programs and ventures that the college offers.
We believe that engaging in activities outside the classroom is an important part of self-discovery and exploration - it’s why we offer a myriad of opportunities for you to participate in beyond the honors courses you are already taking. These pastimes range from recreation to cultural activities to career and professional development. For example, every Thursday at 7 p.m., we meet in the lounge to hear experts on various subjects that relate to social, spiritual, financial, intellectual, occupational, or environmental issues. These weekly gatherings give staff members and myself the opportunity to see you in person and, aside from the joy we get from interacting with you, the chance to find out if we can help you with something or point you in the right direction. Through this programming, we promise to help you build your skills and critical thinking abilities, to provide you with a chance to explore and pursue your interests, and to give you the tools to maintain good physical and mental health. (For the full fall schedule of events, visit Experience WMU.)
Additionally, the college provides student mentors to help you to make the transition to college life easier and more enjoyable. This mentorship program (PSST) is designed to offer an academic and social support system. LHC mentors are sophomore, junior and senior students who have the knowledge and experience to help you during your first year at WMU. \Among other things, they engage you in recreational activities that will allow you to meet other freshman students who want to connect with peers that share the same academic drive and determination. Meet the mentors on the PSST page of our website, and let us know if you would like to join this program if you haven’t already done so.
These are just a couple of examples of the programming offered in the college, and there is much, much more: advising, scholarships (study abroad, research, emergency funds), travel to nearby cities (Chicago, Detroit) through our Metropolitan Series, the Study in the States program, study abroad in Portugal for spring break of 2023, and more. Come join us!
We will support you in finding the road to success, regardless of your major. If you put in the time and the sincere effort, you will enjoy, thrive, and prosper while in the Lee Honors College.
I am looking forward to meeting you in person as you visit our building to take classes, study, attend one of the many events we have prepared for you, or simply stop by to start your day with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate.
Have a great semester!
Dean López
