2018-2019 First-Year Honors Students:
It is a pleasure to inform you that you have been admitted to the Carl and Winifred Lee Honors College effective Fall 2018. We offer special honors courses and seminars, optional honors housing, cultural and social activities, personal advising, and opportunities for professional internships and undergraduate research. We encourage all honors students to take full advantage of honors college events, activities, and opportunities and to become engaged participants in the WMU honors community.
The honors college has a $100 per semester program fee. All proceeds from the fee support honors coursework, the co-curriculum and allows us to provide many special activities and events to our students at a greatly reduced rate or free of charge.
Being a member of the Lee Honors College carries certain responsibilities and obligations. These are outlined below:
- Complete eighteen (18) honors college credits including HNRS 4980: How and Why to Write an Undergraduate Thesis (one [1] online credit hour). HNRS 4980 is a prerequisite for HNRS 4990: Honors Thesis.
- Complete one (1) credit hour of HNRS 4990: Honors Thesis or an honors college approved departmental substitute course. Any courses accepted for substitution will only be honored as one (1) credit hour regardless of amount of institutional credit given. This course is included in your required amount of honors college credit hours.
- Complete twenty (20) hours of approved community service each academic year and submit completed and signed volunteer time log to honr-forms@wmich.edu or in hard copy form to the LHC front desk.
- Attend four (4) LHC sponsored events during the 2018-19 academic year and two (2) during the 2019-2020 academic year. These events are listed in the weekly LHC newsletter.
- Complete and successfully defend an honors college thesis before you graduate. You must file the appropriate paperwork (Thesis Declaration Form, Thesis Defense Certificate Request, approved thesis, etc.) according to LHC deadlines.
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better.
- Attend Mandatory Freshman Advising (MFA) in Fall 2018; schedule and attend a minimum of one (1) academic advising appointment every year you are in the college.
- Complete the honors college graduation audit and ceremony RSVP. These will be emailed to you.
Upon completion of the above requirements together with your other WMU graduation requirements, you will become a graduate of the WMU Lee Honors College. This information will appear on your academic transcript and in the commencement program.
We urge you to see one of our academic advisors, who can help you plan your honors curriculum. You may call (269) 387-3230 to make an appointment.
Sincerely,
Dr. Gary Bischof, Dean
