Benefits Open Enrollment

Beginning fall 2019, Western Michigan University communications about your health plan and other benefits will move almost exclusively to electronic formats, including your WMU email address and the WMU Human Resources web pages at  As part of this change, your 2020 open enrollment guide will be available online only.  The guide will not be printed and mailed to you, as has been the past practice.  Please look for the open enrollment guide by Monday, Oct. 28.

Please review the Sept. 30 mailing to WMU employees that are eligible for the WMU health plan.

If you are a participant on the WMU Retiree Health Plan, please review the Sept. 30 mailing.

Western Michigan University’s 2020 open enrollment period begins on Monday, Oct. 28 and concludes on Monday, Nov. 15, 2019.  All enrollment and change forms must be submitted to Human Resources by 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15.

Enrollment elections will take effect on Jan. 1, 2020.

Health plan pre-tax payroll deduction amount changes will take effect with your first paycheck in January 2020.

Your current benefits elections will continue into next year if you do not take any actions.  This is your annual opportunity to add dependents to your health plan or enroll yourself if you waived coverage.  After open enrollment ends, you cannot change your benefits election unless you have a qualifying life event.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA) elections must be renewed each year during open enrollment.  FSA elections will not roll over into the next year.

This is also a good time to update your address and life insurance beneficiary designations.

Open enrollment guides for 2020 benefits with coverage and rates information will be available for review on this website by Monday, Oct. 28, 2019.
