Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering

When you apply to Western for your Ph.D. in industrial engineering, you find a program designed to combine the traditional research experience of a Ph.D. program with course work and laboratory experiences needed to prepare graduates to pursue careers in both academic and industrial settings.

The WMU Ph.D. program is the only program in industrial engineering in Michigan with a core area of engineering management. The program emphasizes breadth of knowledge and requires students to conduct a significant, focused field study and complete a dissertation research project.

What will you study?

Your doctoral work will be specific to you, especially as your work on research. You must complete the general requirements listed below and should consult the course requirements catalog or the advisor for further details.

  • 75 credit hours beyond the baccalaureate degree
  •  Comprehensive examination after completion of all course work
  • Oral defense of the dissertation
  • Teaching internship
  • Enrollment on campus in four consecutive semesters or sessions
  • Required research tools
