Public career fairs, special events for WMU students slated

Photo of WMU Career Fair.KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Western Michigan University will be the site for two upcoming career fairs that are open to the public but aimed at the University's students and recent alumni.

Both of the fairs are free and being held on WMU's main campus. No pre-registration is required. For directions to the University or a campus map, visit wmich.edu/maps.

In addition, a special event has been scheduled to help WMU students prepare for one of the upcoming fairs, while three events have been scheduled for WMU students interested in business careers. The latter events are being presented by the Zhang Career Center in the Haworth College of Business and are detailed at wmich.edu/business/career.

Upcoming events

  • The Graduate and Professional School Fair will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, in the Bernhard Center Ballroom.
  • The Broadcast Media Career and Networking Fair will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in Brown Hall's first-floor lobby. WMU students may prepare for the fair during a workshop from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, in 3065 Brown Hall. RSVPs are appreciated at app.joinhandshake.com/login.
  • Finance Career Development Day (for WMU students) will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in 1200 and 1400 Schneider Hall.
  • Major Match-up (for WMU students) will take place 5 to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 14-16, on the first floor of Schneider Hall.
  • The MBA Professional Panel (for WMU students) will be presented from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in the Schneider Hall Dean's Conference Room.

Event descriptions

The Graduate and Professional School Fair provides opportunities for those interested in exploring their options for advanced studies. Representatives from graduate and professional schools in Michigan and throughout the United States will be participating in the event. Those seeking tips on how to apply to graduate, law or medical schools may attend one of three workshops set for 3 to 4 p.m. on the second floor of the Bernhard Center, near the fair's main exhibit hall. No registration is required for the workshops.

The fair is being co-sponsored by the Graduate College and the Office of Career and Student Employment Services. Free parking will be available close to the Bernhard Center in Parking Structure No. 1, located at the corner of West Michigan Avenue and North Dormitory Road next to Ellsworth Hall. The Broadcast Media Career Fair is part of a larger set of annual events hosted by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation. The foundation hosts Broadcast Media Career and Networking fairs around the state every fall to bring potential employers and career counselors to where students are. Participating employers will be on hand to promote their organizations and career fields as well as discuss possibilities for full-time, part-time, internship and volunteer positions.

The fair is being co-sponsored by WMU's School of Communication and Career and Student Employment Services. Attendees should be prepared to give out their contact information and samples of their work, such as audio and video clips. Finance Career Development Day educates WMU students on the various career pathways associated with finance and personal financial planning. The event includes a networking breakfast, an industry panel, a mini career fair and an employer and faculty lunch.
