Statement of policy

The purpose of the policy is to articulate the policy and accompanying procedures for the appointment of retirement eligible faculty to achieve emeriti status.

Emeritus status may be recommended for faculty members who are retiring provided that hey have a minimum of ten (10) years or the equivalent of full-time service in a board-appointed, ranked faculty position.

  1.  The chair writes to the dean recommending emeritus status and attaches a cop of the faculty member's notice of retirement.
  2. The dean reviews the recommendation and, if in support, writes to the provost recommending the emeritus status and attaches a copy of both the chair and faculty member's letters. A brief biographical sketch indicating degrees received and some contributions to Western Michigan University should also be submitted to the provost.
  3. The provost reviews the submitted documents and sends written communication documenting his decision to the faculty member, dean, and chair/director. The provost then submits the requires and recommendation for final approval by the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees.
  4. The provost communicates the decision of the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees.

The recommendation for emeritus status is to be included in the documents of retirement.
