July 2020 Appreciation

Who deserves appreciation? Tiffany White and Robin Brown have been so instrumental to me during a difficult time for all of higher education, and also for WMU's School of Social Work.  Both have been consistent sources of information, guidance, and people to think through hard decisions about how to recommend the best use of our decreased resources.  They have been available consistently, and have shown expertise and compassion in ways that represent all of us well.

Who deserves appreciation? During this time, I have been trying to address racial injustice and take a hard look at my own role in systemic racism and White supremacy in my life and work.  This work is hard and necessary, and I am failing as often as I am succeeding in it.  Two of my colleagues, Dr. Bridget Weller and Marian Tripplett, have provided consultation and feedback that has allowed me to continue to grow without shame.  When I am able to hear them, their counsel has helped me to avoid entering spaces without thinking clearly about the implications of my actions.  When I only figure it out afterwards,  they have continued to be kind in allowing me to acknowledge my learning and commitments to change.  Their grace and expertise are key for me in the anti-racism work I am embarking on professionally and personally.
