Job Advertising Procedures

These procedures apply to all bargaining unit faculty appointments approved by the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees: tenure, tenure-track, one-year term, or grant, at the rank of dean, chair, professor, associate professor, assistant professor, faculty specialist and instructor.

  1. National posting: It is recommended that a print advertisement be placed with the Chronicle of Higher Education or other appropriate national professional journal. Retain the original ad tear sheet. Each position should also be listed with the placement service of the most relevant professional association.
  2. In the event of immigration sponsorship, an acceptable (but less effective) alternative to the print ad in a national professional journal is the use of an electronic or web-based national professional journal instead of a print journal when conducting recruitment under the Department of Labor (Department) regulations for college and university teachers. An employer may satisfy this regulatory provision by posting an electronic ad for at least 30 calendar days on the journal's website. Documentation of the placement of an advertisement in an electronic or web-based national professional journal must include evidence of the start and end dates of the advertisement placement and the text of the advertisement. The employer should evidence the ad text by printing screen shots of the ad text proving the 30 day duration (on day 1 and day 30), along with invoice proof.
  3. University (state and local) posting: The position must be listed with the Western Michigan University Department of Human Resources which, in turn, will advertise the vacancy as follows:
    • A. Local agencies and organizations that represent minorities, veterans, and disabled.
    • B. All faculty vacancies will be listed on the online recruiting system.
    • C. Departments are encouraged to list vacancies on the department/college websites, providing a hyperlink to the full posting on the on-line recruiting system faculty vacancies.

These procedures do not preclude the right of the department to utilize the personal contacts of faculty and to advertise the vacancy in other ways it deems desirable. Please remember to use the guidelines for the use of the university’s signature when advertising.
