Pathways to Science Teaching - Schedule

Summer 2020 Tentative Schedule

The program runs from May 8 to July 24, 2020. Meetings take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Weeks 1 to 5: Collaborate with team members and WMU faculty to design and conduct an environmental science research project.

Weeks 6 to 10: Create and teach lessons for elementary and middle school children that emphasize scientific practices from your science research experiences.

Orientation: Get to know the project leaders and your fellow participants on a hike at a local nature preserve.

Learn science: Receive introduction to local environmental and water quality issues through meetings with community non-profit, government, and industry groups, as well as with WMU faculty and staff.

5/18-5/22

Learn science: Receive introduction to environmental science content, tools, and theory. Develop a research question and design the study.

Think science: Reflect on scientific methods, how to get “good” measurements, and how to communicate through data and charts.

5/25-5/29

Practice science: Conduct the research project  field data collection and laboratory analysis.

Think science: Analyze results and practice creating charts, texts, and graphs to communicate findings. Prepare a poster that describes the results of the study.

Teach science: Learn about inquiry and state and national standards; plan lessons for the summer camp.

Teach science: Practice summer camp lessons and receive feedback from master teachers.

Debrief: Give oral and poster presentations and demonstrations of the Pathways research and teaching experience to community stakeholder groups, WMU faculty and staff, and participant friends and families.
